How to Choose a Continuing Education Provider

Staying current with your continuing education (CE) is crucial for every CTEC Registered Tax Preparer (CRTP). But with so many options out there, how can you be sure you’re choosing a CTEC-approved education provider who meets all requirements? Here’s what you need to know to make the right choice, so you can renew with confidence and avoid costly mistakes.

1. Start with the Official CTEC List

Not all education providers are CTEC-approved. The safest way to ensure your CE credits will count is to:

Tip: Avoid using outdated bookmarks or recommendations—always check the most recent list directly on the CTEC website.

2. Confirm the Education Provider Offers the Right Courses

CTEC requires specific topics and a set number of hours for renewal (including federal tax law, ethics, and California tax updates). Before enrolling, make sure:

  • The education provider’s courses meet CTEC’s content and hour requirements.
  • All courses are labeled as “CTEC-approved.”

3. Check the Education Provider’s Reputation

A CTEC-approved education provider should also deliver a quality learning experience. Consider:

  • Reading recent reviews or testimonials.
  • Looking for education providers with clear course materials and prompt CE hour reporting.

4. Confirm Timely Reporting of CE Hours

Your education provider is responsible for submitting your completed hours electronically to CTEC—but not all education providers report at the same speed. Ask:

  • How quickly do they report hours after you finish a course?
  • What’s the process if your hours don’t show up in your CTEC account?

Timely reporting helps you avoid delays at renewal time.

5. Verify Cost and Refund Policies

Make sure you understand the education provider’s pricing and refund policy before you pay.

6. Provide Your CTEC ID When Registering

Always give your CTEC ID number (it starts with “A” and six digits) to your education provider when signing up. This helps ensure your hours are correctly credited to your account.

7. Watch for Suspended or Expired Education Providers

An education provider’s approval status can change. Some may have been suspended or are no longer recognized by CTEC. Always double-check their approval right before registering.
