Missed Your CTEC Renewal Deadline? What to Know About Late Renewals and Starting Over.

Staying current with your registration is crucial if you’re a CTEC Registered Tax Preparer (CRTP). Missing renewal deadlines can impact your ability to legally prepare tax returns—and may mean extra steps and fees. Here’s what you need to know about late renewals, fees, and what happens if you miss the final deadline.

CTEC Late Renewal: Key Dates and Fees

If you missed the October 31, 2025 renewal deadline, don’t panic—you have until January 15, 2026 to complete a late renewal. During this period, you must:

  • Complete all renewal registration requirements (including continuing education, valid PTIN, and surety bond)
  • Pay a $55 late fee
  • Pay a $33 registration fee
  • Pay a $2 processing fee

To complete your late renewal, log in to your account and provide the required documentation, along with your payment.

What Happens If You Miss the January 15 Deadline?

If you miss the January 15, 2026 late renewal deadline, you’ll need to reapply as a new preparer. This means starting the registration process from scratch, which includes:

  • Passing a criminal background check and submitting fingerprint images
  • Retaking an approved 60-hour qualifying education course
  • Obtaining a $5,000 surety bond
  • Providing proof of a PTIN from the IRS
  • Completing the new preparer application
  • Paying CTEC’s application and registration fees

Please note: This new application process can take several weeks. You are not permitted to prepare tax returns for clients until your new CTEC registration is complete and approved.

Don’t Wait—Renew Early!

To avoid interruptions in your ability to work as a CRTP, set reminders for key deadlines, complete your continuing education early, and check your CTEC account for updates. Renewing on time keeps you compliant and prevents unnecessary delays.
