CTEC Registered Tax Preparers (CRTPs) are facing a lot of new changes before the end of this year on both state and federal levels.
Above all else, don’t forget….
All CTEC registrations (new and renewing) must now be completed online.
The IRS is requiring unenrolled tax preparers (anyone who is not an attorney, CPA or EA) to complete continuing education requirements each year and take a competency exam by December 31, 2012. Despite the new IRS rules, please remember the deadline to renew with CTEC is still October 31st of each year.
CTEC has revised its continuing education requirements to 15 hours federal (the same as the new IRS requirement) and five hours state.
Effective November 1, 2012, the CTEC late fee will increase from $15 to $55.
Starting November 1, 2012, CRTPs now have until January 15th of each year to renew late. For example, if a CRTP misses the October 31st deadline and does not renew by January 15, 2013, his/her CTEC registration will expire and the CRTP will have to start over— which includes retaking the 60-hour qualifying education course and registering as a newCRTP.
