It’s that time again….
If you already completed the continuing education requirements (12 hours federal, 4 hours state, 2 hours ethics, plus 2 hours federal and/or state), now is the time to renew for the 2011/2012 CTEC cycle.
How do I renew online?
To renew online, click on the Preparer Registration and Personal Account box. You must have:
Starting this registration cycle, certificates for online renewals will be available to download through the CTEC website. CTEC Registered Tax Preparers (CRTPs) who renew online will no longer receive a certificate by mail.
To receive an embossed certificate, CRTPs can order a copy for $10. Requests can be made online or by mail. CTEC will only accept cashier’s checks or money orders for mail order requests.
CTEC will continue to send ID cards by mail.
How do I renew by mail?
To renew by mail, you must have:
If any of the above documents are missing, your application will be sent back. If your application is postmarked by October 31st, but is returned to you due to missing information, you will be required to pay the $15 late fee. CRTPs who renew manually will get a certificate and ID card by mail within four to six weeks.
What if my education has not been reported?
To renew online all of your education must have been electronically reported to CTEC by your education provider. If your education is not showing up, call your education provider(s) to upload the hours into the system. Remember CTEC policy allows education providers 45 days from the date the course was completed to report hours earned so please plan ahead.
If you prefer to renew by mail, you are still required to provide a copy of your education certificate(s).
What if I don’t have a PTIN?
As of January 1, 2011, the IRS is requiring all paid tax preparers (includes attorneys, CPAs, CRTPs and EAs) who prepare or assist with preparing federal tax returns for a fee, to have a valid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). CRTPs who do not have a valid PTIN cannot renew their CTEC registration.
To find out more about the PTIN requirement, visit www.irs.gov/taxpros.
Important: This will be the last year mail-in renewals will be accepted. Starting August 1, 2012, online renewal registrations will be required.
For details about CTEC renewal requirements, read the August newsletter or post a comment if you have a question.

My PTIN expired in 12/31/2011. while CTEC registration expired on 10/31/2011. I was not actvie during the 2010/2011 tax season. I have just completed the Continuing Education and passed. I want to renew both PTIN and CTEC for the Tax season 2012/2013. For PTIN it should be after October 15th, am not sure about CTEC. Any help on this would be much appreciated. You need to first register late for the 2011/2012 cycle BEFORE October 31st. If you don't, then you'll have to start over, take the 60 hour course again and register as a new CRTP. Because your PTIN expired after the CTEC October 31, 2011 renewal deadline, you should be able to renew your CTEC registration late as long as you have a current bond and 20 hours (15 federal and 5 state) of continuing education. As for the current 2012/2013 cycle, you cannot renew with CTEC until your PTIN is current with the IRS, you have an up-to-date bond and have at least 20 additional hours (15 federal and 5 state) of continuing education. Please call the CTEC office if you have additional questions 877-850-2832.
apply by mail now
i would like an embossed statement of compliance
Regarding the requirement that the provider electronically report education hours to CTEC: Apparently the BOE is exempt. I attended a seminar given by the BOE and they refused to take my CTEC number. She argued with me, saying the BOE had a special arrangement with CTEC so that a paper certificate sent to me would suffice for CTEC credit.
Unfortunately that is not true. BOE is also responsible for electronically submitting the education to CTEC. At this point you may have to submit your renewal by mail with copies of your CE hours. Or, if you want, please call our office next week, August 22nd (Our education provider staff is limited due to the IRS tax forum this week) and we can give you more information over the phone.
